Florence is a magical city filled with history, breathtaking architecture, and unforgettable cuisine. On a recent trip, I savored incredible meals at local trattorias and osterias—each one more special than the last.

One of my favorites was Buca Mario, founded in 1886 and now run by the Pasquetti family, who truly understand hospitality and welcome every guest with warmth and care.

The restaurant is housed in an underground wine cellar (“buca”) of Palazzo Niccolini. With its vaulted ceilings and historic charm, stepping inside feels like entering a beautifully preserved piece of Florence’s past.

The team is attentive and genuinely friendly, ensuring that every guest feels well cared for. The food is traditional Tuscan fare, prepared with authenticity and love.

We began with a fresh artichoke salad and delicate zucchini blossoms, followed by homemade pasta with rich ragù and stuffed ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach in a fragrant sage butter sauce. For dessert, our server presented a cart of irresistible options. We chose the crème caramel—one of the best I’ve ever had.

Buca Mario is an institution, celebrated not only for its divine Tuscan cuisine but also for its attention to detail and its beautifully historic setting.
