One of the true pleasures of business travel is the opportunity to step outside the day’s agenda and experience a destination through its food. On a recent trip to Southern California, I had the pleasure of a business dinner at Rustic Canyon—an evening that felt both elevated and warmly inviting.

Rustic Canyon doesn’t rely on formality to impress. Instead, it welcomes you in with an understated charm, where the focus is squarely on thoughtful cooking and genuine hospitality. What unfolds is a dining experience that feels refined yet deeply personal. Chef Elijah Deleon has described the ingredients he works with as “beautiful,” and that sense of care is evident in every dish.

With much of the menu sourced from local vendors and the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, there is a freshness that defines the entire experience. The dishes are elegant without being overworked—simple in concept, yet layered with intention and flavor. Our table shared a variety of plates, allowing us to fully appreciate the kitchen’s approach.

Among my favorites were the bluefin tuna crudo, delicate and clean; the garden of lettuces, vibrant and crisp; and the fried Japanese sweet potatoes, perfectly balanced with a subtle richness. Roscoe’s asparagus and the grilled heirloom artichoke highlighted just how compelling seasonal vegetables can be in the right hands. For a more substantial course, I chose the Petaluma half chicken. As someone who doesn’t eat red meat, it was a perfect choice—comforting, beautifully prepared, and full of depth without feeling heavy.

The beverage program is equally thoughtful, offering a curated selection of wines, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options that complement the meal without overwhelming it.

What stayed with me most was the feeling Rustic Canyon creates. It’s a place where high-quality ingredients, skilled preparation, and a genuine sense of hospitality come together effortlessly. The result is a dining experience that captures the spirit of Southern California—fresh, relaxed, and quietly luxurious.
