Through decades of business travel, I’ve learned that some of the most memorable moments happen in the spaces between meetings — discovering a charming café, strolling through a local market, or finding a specialty grocery store that captures the spirit of a city. Since cooking at home has always been one of my favorite ways to unwind, I make it a point to visit unique food markets whenever my travels allow.
During a recent business trip to Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to visit Erewhon, the iconic organic grocery destination that has become synonymous with elevated wellness culture. Much has been said about the celebrity smoothies and famously expensive strawberries, but I was curious to experience the store beyond the headlines and social media buzz.
I stopped at the Venice Beach location, where the atmosphere immediately felt polished yet welcoming. The team members were warm, attentive, and genuinely kind, creating an experience that felt more boutique than supermarket. Before beginning the long drive back, I decided to pick up a few nourishing bites and take my time exploring the store.
Every aisle felt thoughtfully curated, but the produce and prepared foods sections were especially stunning. The displays of fruits and vegetables resembled an art installation — vibrant colors, flawless presentation, and meticulous attention to detail. Everything looked impossibly fresh, almost too beautiful to touch.
The prepared foods selection was equally impressive, offering an abundance of seasonal and health-conscious options. I sampled the oriental chicken salad alongside the roasted mixed carrots, both of which tasted exceptionally fresh and delicately prepared. There was a homemade quality to everything — refined, flavorful, and comforting without feeling heavy.
Before leaving, I selected a few gifts to bring home for family and friends. The organic chocolate biscotti, beautifully packaged in glass jars embossed with the Erewhon logo, felt effortlessly chic. I also chose dried organic mango slices with no added sugar and petite bottles of organic extra virgin olive oil — simple luxuries that were both practical and indulgent.
As someone who has become increasingly mindful about ingredients, preservatives, and the overall quality of what I consume, I appreciated Erewhon’s commitment to wellness and presentation alike. Yes, there are undeniably extravagant items, but there are also many thoughtfully sourced products that justify the experience. Visiting Erewhon felt less like grocery shopping and more like stepping into a curated lifestyle — one centered around beauty, health, and intentional living.
