Some of my most memorable travel experiences begin at the table. On a recent visit to the Costa del Sol to see family, a meal at Neda’s in Estepona brought together two things I treasure: beautifully prepared Persian comfort food and the kind of personal hospitality that makes you want to return.
Neda herself is central to the experience. Warm and gracious, she takes a thoughtful interest in her guests, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate and wonderfully welcoming.
We settled at an outdoor table, with the breeze from the nearby beach setting an unhurried pace. For me, this is one of the pleasures of dining in southern Spain: time to appreciate the setting, enjoy good company, and let a meal unfold.
The menu offered an enticing selection of Persian appetizers, kabobs, and slow-cooked stews. We began with salad Shirazi, its finely chopped cucumber, tomato, and onion providing a fresh, crisp counterpoint to the creamy yogurt and shallot appetizer. Simple dishes, but so satisfying when prepared well.
My choice was the chicken kabob, marinated in saffron and lemon juice and grilled until tender and succulent. The delicate fragrance of saffron and brightness of lemon complemented the chicken beautifully. Alongside came grilled tomatoes and onions and an individual serving of aromatic basmati rice, each grain distinct beneath a golden crust.
That crust—tahdig, one of the great pleasures of a Persian table—was a highlight. Its crisp texture against the delicate rice and juicy chicken made this a dish to savor. It was among the best Persian meals I have enjoyed.
Others at our table chose grilled beef kabobs and an assortment of traditional stews. Everyone was delighted, and we lingered over our meal, enjoying the coastal air and the pleasure of being together.
I value dining venues with a sense of personality, where the welcome is sincere and the food gives you a reason to remember the visit. Neda’s offered exactly that. Her care was evident throughout our meal, adding a personal touch that no elaborate setting could replace. I will certainly be returning on my next trip.
