There are places best appreciated without an itinerary. Estepona’s old town is one of them. On a recent visit to the Costa del Sol, I found myself wandering its flower-lined streets, past small restaurants and inviting cafés, before arriving at the Plaza de las Flores. Overlooking the square, Hotel El Pilar offered every reason to linger.

Our first visit was for sunset drinks on the rooftop, where the view stretches across the old town toward the mountains. As the light softened over Estepona, it was a lovely place to settle into the evening.

Yet it was the hotel’s café on the plaza that drew me back. Beneath a generous umbrella, overlooking the flowers of the plaza and the gentle activity of the square unfolding nearby, a simple coffee became an occasion. I loved being close to the life of the town while feeling comfortably removed from its pace.

Come in the morning for coffee, pause for something light in the afternoon, or return for a drink as evening approaches. The café offers light fare, while the outdoor restaurant provides a more extensive menu—a welcome invitation to let an afternoon stretch into dinner.

El Pilar has the elegance of its historic surroundings, balanced by an atmosphere that feels youthful, warm, and easy. During my stay, I returned several times: for the rooftop views, for the pleasure of sitting among the flowers, and for the quiet satisfaction of finding a favorite table in a town away from home.
